  21. I see this again and agian. It seems there is something good about amigados
  22. that keeps even 'deserters' interested...

  24. It's sad, but unless AT does something real good (and suitably affordable),
  25. I'll be forced to go to the PC also. I would like to see amigados
  26. re-written so it could run on any PPC platform (or better, a version for
  27. all the decent CPU's - maybe even the pentium Pro ?).

  29. I fear that AT will make amigados dependant on custom hardware (as opposed
  30. to just being able to use it), and the amiga will be significantly
  31. over-priced all over again.

  33. I look at these super-cheap Pentium pc's, and feel sad that we cannot get
  34. that sort of cpu power for that sort of price. I do not like msdos, nor do
  35. I like unix much more. I would like to be able to run amigados on one of
  36. these fast cpu's - or even better, on a fast PPC chip. I still belive that
  37. amigados has advantages over other operating systems, and if given a chance
  38. and handled properly, more people would know that. Amigados will run in a
  39. couple of megs ram, and only needs a small HD to be truly useful. It's
  40. fast, tight, and effecient. It seems quite modular (and could easily be
  41. more so), and has a usable selection of software. And more.

  43. I also fear that while the Power PC chip is good, it is not good enough. I
  44. see tests where it is consistantly at the 'low end' of the new cpu's. Chips
  45. made by MIPS, HP, and yes, even Intel, come in as faster. Is the PPC chip
  46. significantly better price/performance ? Or are we being lumped with a
  47. second generation dead end ?

  49. Perhaps amigaos could be made hardware independant ? Like, but better than,
  50. windoze NT ? So you could choose any hardware you like (not just ppc/68k) -
  51. as long as there were hardware 'modules' for it.. I think it could work,
  52. and be quite fast even. The key parts of the os (those used most often -
  53. inc. the 'virtual cpu') would be moved off into a 'hardware module', 
  54. while the bulk of the OS would run as some sort of virtual CPU code. Just 
  55. plain 68k emulation might do for the v-cpu, for a year or so...

  58. How well AT does the PPC amiga, how fast it is, and how cheap it is, will
  59. dictate my future with AmigaOS. Ideally, I'd have a SGI; or (dreaming now!)
  60. a supercomputer :-). But I can't for the same reason I might not get a
  61. future amiga: Price. As nice as amigaOS is, it's been knocked around and
  62. mauled by Commodore, ignored by much of the computer industry, and left for
  63. dead for more than a year. I don't know - perhaps all of that has been the
  64. death of it (sad), and we are more like a few surviving citizens of Rome
  65. trying to teach the barbarians the fine arts and sciences... Old Pope Gates
  66. will likly bring about a computer 'Dark Ages'...

  70. I hope amigaOS survives, but I am starting to think it won't, and I will be
  71. forced to use a less ideal computer os.. I am not sure AT has the smarts to
  72. outwit pope gates and his billions, or profiteer barons and their asian
  73. clone companies..

  82. The emulator is a start, but I would like to see a proper version of
  83. amigados for all platforms. If Pope Bill can do it with a bloated windoze
  84. NT, I think AT can do it with amigados - even if it costs a bit of backward
  85. compatibility. Do we want amigados for a couple more years, or the next 20
  86. ?
